About Us

Spotlight on China is a project by Naturewatch.

Spotlight on China’s ultimate goal is to help the Chinese authorities introduce and enforce animal welfare laws for the purpose of protecting domestic, farmed and captive animals in China. Achieving this may take years, but with every strategic step of the campaign, we aim to accomplish important milestones, which will all contribute towards improving the welfare for millions of animals across China.

We are working very closely with our partner organisation, ACTAsia, which comprises of highly experienced international animal welfare specialists, located both in the UK and in China.

Pei Su, the Executive Director and founder of ACTAsia, has been active in animal protection movement for fifteen years. She has spearheaded various campaigns in Asia on issues including Chinese bear farming, fur farming, the illegal turtle trade, zoos and stray animal management. She also has in-depth knowledge and experience in strategic planning and international animal welfare project management in diverse environments. Over the last seven years she has focused on building the capacity of local advocates around the world. Pei is from Taiwan, yet lives in the UK; and has a Masters degree in Sociology.

With the help of ACTAsia, Naturewatch has carefully selected Chinese animal welfare groups to support.  With our funding and ACTAsia’s expertise in Chinese animal welfare, we are helping the groups to develop their work and provide them the expertise and resources needed to assist them in helping more animals.

Whist we are supporting them with their daily projects, we are also training them on how to work with their local authorities with the aim of introducing animal protection laws.  The key to this aspect of Spotlight on China’s success is the establishment of a strong working relationship between the three local Chinese animal welfare groups and their local Chinese authorities.

Naturewatch

Naturewatch, formed in 1991, is based in Gloucestershire, England and campaigns against cruelty to animals.  For information, please see http://www.naturewatch.org.  Naturewatch is also the proud sponsors of World Animal Day, please see http://www.worldanimalday.org.uk .

Two very successful Naturewatch projects that are still active today have provided us with the knowledge and expertise required for us to embark upon Spotlight on China.

We have years of experience of working with people who’ve spent most of their lives under Communist rule, and although progress has been slow, our commitment to their animal welfare needs and our determination to understand their culture has paid off.  We have gained immense experience in Lithuania and Ukraine, and we are using this knowledge and experience, together with the expertise from ACTAsia, to meet our goal of successfully introducing animal protection laws in China.
