About Us
Spotlight on China is a project by Naturewatch.
Spotlight on China’s ultimate goal is to help the Chinese authorities introduce and enforce animal welfare laws for the purpose of protecting domestic, farmed and captive animals in China. Achieving this may take years, but with every strategic step of the campaign, we aim to accomplish important milestones, which will all contribute towards improving the welfare for millions of animals across China.
Naturewatch, formed in 1991, is based in Gloucestershire, England and campaigns against cruelty to animals.
As well as our Spotlight on China campaign, our work includes:
-
Campaigning to end animal experiments in the UK.
-
Producing the Compassionate Shopping Guide that lists cruelty free cosmetics and household products.
-
Helping stray animals in Ukraine with the help of our representative, Tamara Tarnawska, since 1996.
-
Rescuing wildlife and improving conservation in Lithuania with the help of our representative, Dr Ben Noreikis, since 1993.

Two very successful Naturewatch projects that are still active today have provided us with the knowledge and expertise required for us to embark upon Spotlight on China.
We have years of experience of working with people who’ve spent most of their lives under Communist rule, and although progress has been slow, our commitment to their animal welfare needs and our determination to understand their culture has paid off. We have gained valuable experience in Lithuania and Ukraine, and we are using this knowledge and experience to campaign for the animals in China.
